Mahashivratri or night of Lord Shiva is an auspicious day dedicated to worship of Lord Shiva. The festival is generally celebrated in the Georgian months of Feb or March. According to Hindu calendar Mahashivratri falls on the night before ‘Amavasya’ in the month of Feb. in entire north India. In 2010, the date of Mahashivaratri is February 12.
Masa Shivratri also observed on the thirteenth day of Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in all traditional Hindu months.
Many people have fasting and they eat ‘FALAHAAR’, Kuttoo Puri or Roti, Sweet potato chat or kheer and other vegetables. Many of Hindus celebrate it with all kind of delicious vegetarian food and cultural programs based on Shiva Ji’s pastimes and songs. As all the temples related to Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj do including our Shri Kripalu Kunj Ashram, Houston.
It is immensely important for the devotees of Lord Krishna since the pastimes of Shankar Ji are connected with all the major pastimes of Lord Krishna. Shankar Ji appeared at the time of His birth in the palace of Nandrai and Yashoda, He appeared in the play of holi to tease gopies and He also appeared in the form of a Gopi at the time of Shri Krishna’s highest pastime of Maharas.
Lord Krishna also said in the Geeta, “He is my best devotee”.
Unfortunately, there is a Big dispute prevalent between the devotees of Shiva And Vaishnavas(Lord Ram and Krishna) about the superiority of them. Hence Shri Maharaj Ji composed these 2 lines to remove our ignorance in this connection.
